I'm kind of mad I flipped through the movie trailers section on iTunes a few days ago, thus obviously before reading this, because your review really makes me want to read the book, but I feel like a lot of it has already been ruined by watching the trailer for its movie version. I'm sure it's still worth it, I'm just kicking myself because now I don't get a chance to create an 100%-Mine mental image of the book's world and characters.

Admittedly your imagination doesn't get as many creative opportunities for a book set in WWII, but still. As a better example, I'd never intentionally watch a trailer for <i>The Golden Compass</i> or a Harry Potter movie, without reading the books first, especially knowing film-adaption (read: CUTTING OUT MAJOR THEMES -- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/10/14/npullman114.xml ) trends. I don't really understand other people who do watch the film versions first and don't care how those pictorial representations will corner, beat up, and basically mutilate the characters your mind's eye wants to create.

Anyway, good job meeting my definition of a great review: I now want to read the book, too.

I have to agree with your review entirely - I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did, and my only misgivings were pretty much the same as yours. This was my first taste of Ian McEwan's work - what of his would you suggest to follow?
